Hummingbirds

We are asked often if we sell hummingbird food. We don't sell it because it is so easy to make. Below is the recipe. I usually see hummingbirds arriving at my house around Mother's Day weekend. I try to put the feeders out a few days in advance in case they have arrived early. If this is your first time feeding hummingbirds you may want to put a few drops of red food coloring in the food to attract them to your feeder. After they find the feeder it really isn't necessary to put in the food coloring.

Hummingbird Food

Bring 2 cups of water to a full boil. Stir in 1/2 cup of sugar until fully dissolved. Cool completely before placing in hummingbird feeders. Left over hummingbird food can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Make sure to clean feeders and change food frequently.

** Oriole food is the same recipe but put a few drops of orange food coloring in the sugar water instead of red.

Barn Stars

The history of barn stars date back about 300 years to the Pennsylvania Dutch. Originally the stars were painted directly on the barns. Below is a list of the colors of the barn stars and their meanings:

  • Black - Protection
  • Blue - Peace
  • Brown - Friendship
  • Green - Fertility
  • Orange - Abundance
  • Red - Passion
  • Violet - Sacred
  • White - Purity
  • Yellow - Health
